Only a few days after SpringSource acquisition of G2One, Graeme Rocher announced the release of Grails 1.0.4 this past Friday (latest Spring 2.5.6, some new features, all that ahead of the 1.1 version).

Quartz plugin allows your Grails application to schedule jobs to be executed using a specified interval or cron expression. The underlying system uses the Quartz Enterprise Job Scheduler configured via Spring, but is made simpler by the coding by convention paradigm.

I'm pleased to announce the first release of Grails since the acquisition of G2One by SpringSource. Grails 1.0.4 includes a number of improvements as well as upgrades to key libraries that underpin Grails and can be downloaded from the Grails download page. More specifically Grails 1.0.4 ships with the latest Spring 2.5.6 release that came out a week or so ago.

Grails 1.04 comes along with a fix to the this issue. No sooner had I read about it then I upgraded. Curiously enough after I set up Intellij (Yes version 8) with the 1.04 version of Grails it notified me that I was using different versions and did I want to upgrade.

Writing JEE applications with Grails and Flex

I recently started using the tellurium framework for my functional testing. It is amazing, my tests do not contain any selenium code in them, all that is contained in small descriptive UI modules. A little over a year ago, I then discovered Groovy and Jruby. Both languages were very elegant, and I could see how they could both boost my scripting productivity dramatically. Let's start with a hypothetical conversation between a geeky developer and his much less geeky wife:

Back in those heady days of IDEA 7.0 all I really cared about was the Groovy and Grails support. There really wasn't a good IDE for doing Groovy and Grails. Netbeans was almost non-existent for Groovy and Grails support, the Eclipse Groovy plugin was maybe the best prior to IDEA 7.0 but by their own admission really needed more resources to make it a solid experience. This maybe wasn't so bad for Groovy because Dynamic OO languages (since Smalltalk) always seemed to be for VI fan-boys. But Netbeans (and Intellij) had done some work on a Ruby plugin that wasn't Great but was better than anything Groovy had.

SpringSource today announced that it has purchased G2One, the folks who have been driving the development of Groovy and Grails. The following are my _initial_ thoughts, in no specific order, and perhaps of even less coherence.

The 1.0.1 bugfix version of GrailsUI has been released. This version fixed some trivial bugs that were leftover from the 1.0 release as well as several bugs that the community uncovered in the last couple weeks.

Just to make disclaimer immediately at the beginning. I don't really thing that working with Grails is really expensive, I would display it as expensive from the funny point of view.

If you’re interested in Groovy (and if you’re not you should be) then “Groovy Recipes” is a book you’ll find useful over and over again. There’s enough information here to keep you busy learning and experimenting for a long time. But it doesn’t stop there; “Groovy Recipes” is also an introduction to Grails, the Rails-like web application framework written in Groovy.

You may have already read about it in the various news outlets and blogs covering the announcement, but if you haven’t I’m excited to spread the word that G2One - The Groovy/Grails company - has been acquired by SpringSource. The result is that Groovy and Grails join the growing number of excellent Open Source projects delivered by SpringSource.

Something clicked this morning, though. On Twitter, someone asked What’s the argument against testing private methods again?, and I responded with You should only test private methods insofar as they impact user API. Test contracts: don’t just rewrite your code in asserts. And I suddenly realized the point of BDD.

SpringSource hopes to attract Java developers in the enterprise and dynamic languages fans with its acquisition of Groovy and Grails specialist G2One. The company is today expected to announce that it's buying G2One's team of six experts for an undisclosed package comprising cash and stock. G21 may be small but customers included social network LinkedIn and UK TV broadcasting giant BskyB, who've built back-ends and content management systems on Grails for online users.
