BWToolkit is a BSD licensed plugin for Interface Builder 3 that contains commonly used UI elements and other useful objects. Using these objects is as simple as dragging them from the library to your canvas or document window.

A few weeks ago I published a mini gallery of inspirational footer designs at Vandelay Design. I decided to do some additional research and put together a second part to the series and post it here at DesignM.ag. These blog and website footers are more than the average footer with a copyright and a few links. Some are used primarily for navigational purposes and others add more to the design of the site.

Like I said in my last post, I spent a lot of time trying to get drag and drop to work from a JTree to a JList. I noticed someone trying to do the same thing in the Swing forum on JavaRanch so I ripped out my code I wrote, cleaned it up, and am posting here for consumption and criticism. I didn't do some things that needed to be done like actually writing code in the canImport method. I just returned true for simplicity. I also didn't bother trying to transfer all the children of a node to the JList.

So I have been spending most of my evening trying to get drag and drop from a JTree to a JList to work with Java6's alleged "simpler D&D support". Simple is relative. I need to actually transfer the user object from the DefaultMutableTreeNode for my application to really work correctly so that meant providing my own TransferHandler and Transferable implementations.

What can you do with this script: Rotate the image. Resize the image. Crop the image. Save it to your hard drive. There are plenty of online image cropping scripts that are used on sites to create avatars, to scale , to crop images, for photo resize and photo crop - but Kroppr offers image rotation as well, without any plugin (flash or java).

The latest addition in the Flamingo component suite is support for pluggable resizing policies on the ribbon tasks and ribbon bands. In Part 1 I introduced the need for a simple project to help demonstrate and teach Swing best practices. Ever feel like some days you can crank out amazing looking designs with little effort? Then on other days it feels like nothing is working, you’ve lost all your talent and you’ll never make another good design for the rest of your miserable life? Don’t panic – this is natural. It’s like writer’s block, except for designers. It happens to all of us.

Martin Grayson wrote an amazing tutorial about how to create a WPF glass button using blend in his blog. He explained each and everything in very details with the step-by-step instruction. (You can find Tutorial.doc in the sample file of his post.) I’ve been thinking to create the similiar one for Silverlight since I was using Silverlight 1.1 Alpha (a.k.a Silverlight 2 Alpha). Due to some limitation of Silverlight 1.1, it’s not so easy to create it at that time. After that, I’ve been very busy with my job and couldn’t manage to port it to Silverlight.

You know how it goes. Designer creates the design templates or whatever and then developers have their say. Sometimes, it happens that they mess up something. Among many design issues caused by developers, one in particular really drives me me nuts - incorrect usage of > element. I often find that > element is being used to create layout. And this is simply - incorrect.

Latest release includes Line Numbering, Find and Replace Dialog, and support for C. C++, Ruby and Python Languages. All what you need is include the jar file in your classpath, and set your JEditorPane contentType to the language needed.

We actually announced that we are going to ship FX Desktop 1.0 on December 2. We have an event planned in San Fransisco. We are on track for the deliverable. We felt like it was great to make the announcement overseas as opposed to doing it in the US and give all of our partners in Korea a "you heard it here first."

Java(FX) Enterprise Development

Once a subject of heated discussions, the native vs. cross-platform skinning has not been mentioned for quite some time in Swing blogosphere. While this post by no means aims to revive the dead ghosts, i saw something quite interesting in the PDC session on the Windows 7 Explorer. It looks like (at least in the current builds) Microsoft has decided to enforce better consistency across the UI layer of its flagship desktop products, including Office and Media Player. This specific issue has been brought as one of the major arguments against using a native look-and-feel (because the lack of consistency effectively meant that there is no native look-and-feel).

The announce of Sun stopping funding of SwingX is spreading some irrational fears. I'm in the worst moment to blog about that, but I'd like to put some things clear immediately (for this reason I'm not commenting on Kirill's blog - sorry Kirill, I hope this doesn't sound rude, but I don't have the time to follow discussions and answer to others - let's hope for the weekend).
