Converting from Prototype to jQuery

Initially what attracted me to jQuery was it’s compactness. It doesn’t have separately defined classes for each component, like Prototype. There’s one point of entry and most everything revolves around DOM elements. There’s no distinction between selecting a single or multiple DOM element(s) and, because jQuery only uses a selector syntax, you don’t get confused whether the parameter passed is an ID, class, etc.

jQuery Delay Plugin

A simple jQuery plugin that allows you to add a delay between jQuery functions. This small but very useful plugin that has saved me a lot of time. I haven't done a lot of testing, but because the plugin is so small and simple (only 212 bytes!) I don't think I could have missed much!

CSS And HTML Two Level Menus Take Two

I ended the first part of this two part series with a working two level drop down and fly out menu using CSS and HTML. However, we did find that all was not so well when it came to, particularly, Internet Explorer 6. The aim of this part of the series then is to close the gaps and ensure that our menus will work in Firefox, Opera 9.52 and 9.6, Safari 3, Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and for good measure, we will ensure that it works with Google Chrome. So let's get started.

Building Rich Internet Applications Using Pivot and JavaScript

Pivot is a platform for building rich internet applications that run in the Java Plugin. While Pivot applications are often built using a combination of XML and Java, it is sometimes more convenient to build simple applications or applications whose code is likely to change often, such as prototypes, using a scripting language such as JavaScript. Pivot now allows developers to write their application logic using their scripting language of choice, using the features provided by the javax.script package available in Java 6 and above.

John Resig: Accuracy of JavaScript Time

There were two events recently that made me quite concerned.

First, I was looking through some of the results from the Dromaeo test suite and I noticed a bunch of zero millisecond times being returned from tests. This was quite odd since the tests should've taken, at least, a couple milliseconds to run and getting consistent times of "0" is rather infeasible, especially for non-trivial code.

The big news is that I managed to create a few example pages (@jstree.com). I am working on a fully featured example that will combine all the small example pages that are available now - it should be out in a few days.
