It’s fun to contrast the cloud services offered by Google App Engine and Amazon AWS. Through its “Elastic Compute Cloud” or EC2, Amazon gives us near-total flexibility by simply allowing us to run our own virtual machines, which are built from scratch and completely customisable. For many developers this is more than enough rope to hang ourselves with. Google App Engine instead gives us a fixed and simple framework based on Python, and they take responsibility for scaling the application as necessary. This is great if you’re building a new service from scratch and you’re willing and able to build it in Python and accept Google’s design constraints, but it’s utterly useless if you need more flexibility or you have an existing service that you are trying to move into the cloud.

Over the past few months I've been learning Django, mainly due to a number of projects that I've inherited.
