Four days ago, Microsoft unveiled the pre-beta of Windows 7 at PDC and offered up quite a few user interface changes meant to streamline the aging operating system. What they came up with was a taskbar that mimics the styling of the KDE on Linux and further extends the broken window preview concept introduced in Vista. Needless transparency is at every corner, another UI metaphor taken the the extreme since the introduction of Vista; and of course, more ideas from OS X have made their way into Windows, although implemented less intuitively.

Not wanting to rag on something publicly that I hadn't experienced intimately myself, I decided to take the plunge (called "eating your own dog food" in developer parlance) and see if I could move over full-time to the new Windows 7 M3 pre-beta. After all, with an essentially unmodified kernel and no major changes to the security model, how bad could it be?

Over the years, I’ve tolerated a lot of operating system abuse. Earlier in my career, I tended to keep my mouth shut (mainly because I didn’t know any better), but over time, the annoyances have been building up into a crescendo of anger, such that at the end of the day I consistently find myself red-faced, foaming at the mouth, and screaming adjective interjection adjective noun, exclamation1 at my monitor. This week I was evaluating a browser UI test automation framework for .NET from ArtOfTest, Inc. The framework is called WebAii. I was quite impressed. After a few hours of experimenting I was able to automate the clicking of nested context menus in the Component Art ASP.NET tree view control. This would have been impossible with the existing UI automation tools on the market. With WebAii it was a piece of cake. I was also impressed with the quick feedback from their community. With these new tools and skills under my belt I automated the reading of titles, tags and descriptions from the sessions page of the PDC2008 web site. I saved the words in a text file and had Wordle generate a couple of random tag clouds for me. Here are the results.
